Ilya Kutoboy is an artist, illustrator and resident of the a—s—t—r—a gallery, working across painting, graphics and visual storytelling. His practice brings together different disciplines, with brand collaborations extending his artistic voice beyond the exhibition space.
Kutoboy describes his visual language as “tropical primitivism.” His travels across Asia and the islands of Indonesia have shaped his palette, rhythm and imagery. He combines painting and graphics with fragments of text, chance phrases and associative symbols, creating dreamlike spaces with nonlinear stories and their own internal logic.
Animals, plants, imaginary beings and characters exist beyond conventional hierarchies in his work. They share a vivid, fluid visual plane that changes constantly, like an endless carnival of moods and impressions.
The artist works across art, design and commercial collaborations. His partners include Befree, Mates, Planta Rosa, Hikes and Home Story. These projects adapt his distinctive visual language to objects, fashion and contemporary ways of engaging audiences.
